How to Integrate ARCNET into an IIoT Architecture
ARCNET still runs reliably in many factories, especially in legacy automation systems. Rather than replacing it, the realistic approach in modern Industry 4.0 projects is to integrate ARCNET into an IIoT architecture through an edge gateway. This allows existing control systems to operate normally while making operational data available to modern platforms.
ARCNET remains useful because it offers:
● deterministic token passingFor production lines that run continuously, system replacement is risky and costly. Integration solves the problem without interrupting operations.
A typical IIoT integration includes four layers:
Field Layer
ARCNET connects controllers, sensors, and machine modules.
Edge Layer
An ARCNET network card (like the Danpex AN series) is installed in an industrial PC or gateway. It extracts data, converts protocols, and uploads information.
Transport Layer
The gateway sends data using Ethernet, Modbus TCP, OPC UA, or MQTT.
Application Layer
SCADA, MES, or cloud dashboards use this data for monitoring, analytics, or predictive maintenance.
ARCNET continues to handle deterministic control; IIoT handles data visibility and decision support.
1. Install Interface Hardware
Use an ARCNET card in an edge device with ISA/PCI support.
2. Do Protocol Conversion
Convert ARCNET data into modern formats such as Modbus TCP, OPC UA, or MQTT.
3. Secure Network Uplink
Send the processed data to SCADA or cloud platforms through a secure Ethernet connection or VPN.
4. Avoid Cloud Control Loops
Real-time control stays on ARCNET. The cloud is used only for monitoring and optimization.
Most factories adopt a hybrid approach:
● legacy networks continue running machinesThis protects old systems while enabling digital transformation. The result is a minimal-risk upgrade path.
Integrating ARCNET into IIoT doesn’t mean replacing existing systems. By using an edge gateway to collect and convert ARCNET data, factories can extend the life of proven equipment while adding modern monitoring and analytics. This balanced architecture supports Industry 4.0 goals with low risk and high reliability.
