Siemens SINAMICS V20 Voltage and Power Configurations: What Is the Difference?

  • 2026-10-17 11:25:51

Frequency converters within the same product family may share a similar interface and control method, but their voltage and power configurations can be very different. Input voltage determines which power supply can be used, while rated power and output current determine the motor capacity and load the drive can support.

Using the Siemens SINAMICS V20 series as an example, this guide compares three models designed for different power supplies and motor requirements.

How Do Voltage and Power Affect Drive Selection?

The SINAMICS V20 series includes 200–240V single-phase models from 0.12 to 3 kW and 380–480V three-phase models from 0.37 to 30 kW. The drives support USS and Modbus RTU communication and are intended for basic variable-speed applications. Siemens SINAMICS V20 specifications

Voltage determines whether the drive matches the available line supply and motor. Power determines how much mechanical load the drive can operate. Higher-power models generally require more output current, larger cables, additional cabinet space, and greater heat dissipation.

Drives from the same series are therefore not automatically interchangeable.

Three Models for Different Voltage and Power Requirements
1.Siemens 6SL3210-5BB17-5BV1

The 6SL3210-5BB17-5BV1 is a 0.75 kW SINAMICS V20 designed for a 200–240V single-phase AC supply. It provides 150% overload capacity for 60 seconds and includes an integrated C1 filter.

The model offers four digital inputs, two digital outputs, two analog inputs, one analog output, USS/Modbus RTU communication, and a built-in operator panel. Its compact QB frame measures 68 × 142 × 128 mm.

This configuration is suitable for smaller pumps, fans, conveyors, and standalone machines where a compatible single-phase supply is available. Motor voltage, rated current, and load characteristics must still be checked before installation. Siemens 6SL3210-5BB17-5BV1 product information

2.Siemens 6SL3210-5BE22-2CV1

The 6SL3210-5BE22-2CV1 uses a 380–480V three-phase supply and is rated at 2.2 kW. It also provides 150% overload capacity for 60 seconds.

This version includes a C3 filter and an integrated braking unit. It provides the same basic I/O and USS/Modbus RTU communication functions as other V20 models, but its higher power rating allows it to operate larger motors.

The drive uses frame size A and measures approximately 90 × 166 × 145.5 mm. It is relevant to medium-size conveyors, pumps, fans, mixers, and general industrial machinery. Braking resistor selection and braking duty should be checked separately when rapid deceleration is required. Siemens 6SL3210-5BE22-2CV1 product information

3.Siemens 6SL3210-5BE31-1UV0

The 6SL3210-5BE31-1UV0 is an 11 kW model for a 380–480V three-phase supply. It offers 150% overload capacity for 60 seconds and uses the larger frame size D, measuring 240 × 207 × 173 mm.

Unlike the 2.2 kW example, this version is supplied without an integrated line filter. The panel designer must therefore verify whether external EMC components are required for the installation.

The higher rating makes this model suitable for larger pumps, fans, conveyors, compressors, and process equipment. Its power capacity also increases the importance of cable sizing, circuit protection, ventilation, and control-panel space. Siemens 6SL3210-5BE31-1UV0 product information

What Are the Main Differences?

The 0.75 kW model is intended for small motors and a single-phase 230V-class supply. The 2.2 kW model requires a 400V-class three-phase supply and supports a larger motor load. The 11 kW model uses the same general voltage class as the 2.2 kW version but provides substantially more power and requires a larger installation area.

The models also differ in filter class, braking hardware, frame size, cooling requirements, and associated electrical components. A drive cannot be replaced solely because another model has the same communication protocol or product-family name.

Is a Higher-Power Drive Always Better?

A larger drive is not automatically the safer choice. It cannot correct an incompatible line voltage or motor connection, and unnecessary oversizing may increase cost, cabinet space, and cooling requirements.

Selection should be based on motor rated current, continuous load, starting torque, acceleration time, deceleration time, and overload duty. Ambient temperature and installation altitude can also reduce the usable output capacity.

For demanding loads such as mixers, crushers, or high-inertia conveyors, current and overload requirements may be more important than the motor’s kilowatt value alone.

Why Lifecycle Planning Matters

Industrial drives often remain in service for many years. During this period, article numbers may be updated or replaced by successor versions. A new model with the same voltage and power rating may still have a different filter, braking arrangement, frame revision, or terminal layout.

Maintenance teams should record the complete Siemens article number and retain parameter backups for critical equipment. This reduces the risk of ordering a drive that appears suitable but requires unexpected wiring, panel, or commissioning changes.

A Better Procurement Checklist

Before requesting a quotation, verify:

- Complete article number and revision

- Line voltage and number of phases

- Motor voltage, current, frequency, and power

- Load type and overload requirement

- Acceleration and deceleration time

- Filter and EMC requirements

- Braking-unit requirements

- Frame size and available cabinet space

- Communication and I/O requirements

- Existing parameters and required certifications

For replacement projects, include photographs of the drive nameplate, motor nameplate, terminals, and control cabinet. Complete information helps confirm the correct voltage and power configuration before shipment.
