Siemens SINAMICS V20 F1 Fault Troubleshooting and Spare Replacement Guide

  • October 24, 2026
FAQ: What Does an F1 Fault Mean on a SINAMICS V20?
The F1 fault on a Siemens SINAMICS V20 indicates an overcurrent condition. It may appear during startup, acceleration, or normal operation when the output current rises beyond the permitted limit.
An F1 fault does not automatically mean that the drive is damaged. Incorrect motor data, a short acceleration time, excessive starting boost, damaged motor cables, an earth fault, or a mechanically blocked load can produce the same result. Troubleshooting should identify the cause before a spare drive is installed.

Siemens 6SL3210-5BE22-2CV1

The Siemens 6SL3210-5BE22-2CV1 is a SINAMICS V20 frequency converter rated for a 380–480V three-phase supply and a 2.2 kW motor load. It provides 150% overload capacity for 60 seconds.
The model includes a C3 filter, an integrated braking unit, four digital inputs, two digital outputs, two analog inputs, one analog output, USS/Modbus RTU communication, and a built-in operator panel. It uses an IP20 frame measuring approximately 90 × 166 × 145.5 mm. Siemens product information
Typical applications include conveyors, pumps, fans, mixers, and other variable-speed industrial machines.
How Should the Fault Be Investigated?
Troubleshooting must be performed by qualified personnel under the site’s lockout/tagout and electrical-safety procedures. Stored DC-link energy must be discharged and absence of voltage verified before wiring or equipment is touched.
1. Record the Fault Conditions
First determine when F1 occurs:
- Immediately after a start command
- During acceleration
- At a specific operating speed
- After the machine reaches normal load
- Intermittently after long periods of operation
A fault during acceleration may indicate an excessively short ramp time or heavy mechanical load. A fault at constant speed may point to an overloaded machine, damaged motor, wiring problem, or incorrectly sized drive.
2. Inspect the Mechanical Load
Check whether the motor, pump, conveyor, gearbox, or driven mechanism is obstructed. A jammed conveyor, seized bearing, blocked pump, or excessive product load can cause the motor current to rise rapidly.
The mechanical cause should be corrected before the drive is reset. Repeatedly restarting a blocked machine can create additional damage.
3. Check the Motor and Output Wiring
Inspect the motor cable, terminals, grounding, and motor condition. Look for loose connections, damaged insulation, moisture, short circuits, or earth faults.
Siemens also requires the motor-cable length to remain within the permitted limit. Testing must use suitable instruments and follow the motor and drive manufacturer’s isolation procedures.
4. Verify Motor Parameters
Compare the programmed motor data with the motor nameplate. Important values include rated voltage, current, power, frequency, and speed.
For F1, Siemens specifically recommends confirming that motor power parameter P0307 corresponds to the converter rating, motor parameters match the installed motor, and stator resistance parameter P0350 is correct.
5. Review Acceleration and Boost Settings
If the fault occurs during startup, the ramp-up time may be too short for the connected load. Siemens recommends reviewing P1120 and increasing the acceleration time when appropriate.
An excessive starting boost can also produce high current. Parameter P1312 should therefore be checked against the application requirements. Settings should only be changed after the motor and mechanical load have been verified.
The official SINAMICS V20 fault list identifies motor sizing, cable length, short circuits, earth faults, incorrect motor data, mechanical obstruction, ramp-up time, and starting boost as the main F1 checks.

When Should the Drive Be Replaced?

Replacing the converter should not be the first response to an F1 fault. If the problem disappears after correcting a jam, damaged cable, motor fault, or parameter setting, the original drive may remain serviceable.
Replacement becomes appropriate when external causes have been eliminated but the fault persists, the power section shows confirmed damage, or Siemens service recommends replacement after diagnostic testing.
Visible overheating, damaged terminals, contamination, repeated unexplained trips, or internal fault codes should also trigger a more detailed inspection rather than repeated resets.
Spare-Drive Replacement Workflow
Before removing the original drive, record:
- Complete article number and nameplate data
- Motor nameplate information
- Existing parameters and application settings
- Control-terminal and communication wiring
- Mounting dimensions and surrounding clearances
- Filter, braking, and accessory configuration
After the machine is placed in a safe state, isolate all power sources and follow the manufacturer’s discharge procedure. Label the incoming supply, motor, control, and communication wiring before removal.
Install the verified replacement in the same mounting orientation and restore the confirmed parameter set. Check motor data, command source, frequency setpoint, acceleration and deceleration times, digital inputs, analog signals, and Modbus settings before operation.
Initial testing should be completed under controlled conditions. Confirm motor direction, output current, speed command, emergency-stop functions, permissives, alarms, and machine interlocks. Never bypass a safety circuit to complete a functional test.

How Can Maintenance Teams Reduce Downtime?

A prepared spare strategy is more effective than selecting a replacement during an emergency. Keep the exact drive article number, a current parameter backup, wiring photographs, motor data, and commissioning records with the spare-parts list.
For 6SL3210-5BE22-2CV1 replacement requests, provide the full model number rather than only “SINAMICS V20 2.2 kW.” Voltage class, filter option, braking hardware, frame size, and product revision must all be verified.
