GE UR4DH: High-Density Digital I/O Expansion Module for Critical Process Control

  • May 09, 2026

In continuous process industries such as power generation, oil & gas, and water treatment, control system responsiveness and I/O channel density directly impact process stability and maintenance efficiency. GE introduces the UR4DH Digital Input/Output Expansion Module, a core expansion unit within the GE UR (Universal Relay) series, delivering high-reliability, high-density digital signal expansion for PLC, DCS, and ESD systems.

Importance

Modern industrial sites from valve status feedback to motor start/stop commands are experiencing exponential growth in digital signal volume. The UR4DH is specifically designed for applications requiring high-volume discrete signal processing, integrating multiple digital input and output channels into a single compact module.

Unlike general-purpose I/O modules, the UR4DH is deeply optimized for the UR series control architecture. It communicates directly with the UR processor backplane without requiring additional couplers or gateways, achieving microsecond-level signal transmission delays — ensuring fast execution of interlock logic and emergency shutdown commands. "In process control, I/O module failure often degrades entire control loops," said a GE Industrial Systems product engineering lead. "The UR4DH was designed with a clear goal: increase channel density without sacrificing electrical isolation or noise immunity. It allows engineers to cover more control points with fewer modules, reducing spare parts inventory and system complexity."

Key Capabilities

1. High-Density Channel Integration

The UR4DH integrates 32 or more digital I/O points on a single module (exact count depends on the specific suffix). Compared to traditional 16-point modules, the same number of I/O points requires 50% fewer modules — reducing backplane slot usage and terminal block count.

2. Reinforced Electrical Isolation

Each input/output channel features reinforced electrical isolation from both the backplane and other channels, with a withstand voltage rating of up to 1500Vrms. This is critical in industrial environments with ground loops or electromagnetic interference, effectively preventing signal crosstalk and module damage.

3. Hot-Swappable Online Maintenance

The UR4DH supports hot-swap replacement without system power-down. When a module fails, maintenance personnel can remove the faulty unit and insert a new one without stopping production — the system automatically restores configuration. For refineries, power plants, and other facilities where unplanned downtime is unacceptable, this feature translates directly into quantifiable production savings.

4. Wide-Temperature Industrial Reliability

The module operates reliably within a temperature range of -20°C to +60°C and meets GE UR series stringent reliability standards (including CE, UL, and hazardous location certifications). Whether installed in outdoor skid-mounted equipment in northern climates or enclosed control cabinets in tropical regions, the UR4DH delivers long-term stable performance.

Industry Applications

Power Generation - In boiler safety monitoring systems (FSSS) or turbine digital electro-hydraulic control systems (DEH), large numbers of discrete signals — flame detection, valve limit switches, trip commands — require highly reliable acquisition and output. The UR4DH serves as a digital expansion arm for ESD systems, delivering field signals to the UR controller without delay for safety logic execution.

Oil & Gas Pipelines - At pipeline block valve stations or compressor stations, remote terminal units (RTUs) demand low power consumption and high communication reliability. The UR4DH's low-power design, combined with the UR series processor's remote I/O capability, enables unmanned station digital signal acquisition networks.

Water & Wastewater Treatment - Lift station pumps, aeration control valves, and other equipment in wastewater plants rely heavily on digital signals for start/stop commands and status feedback. The UR4DH's high-density characteristics make it ideal for dense I/O pump house local cabinets, communicating with the central PLC via the backplane bus while dramatically reducing field wiring.
